Glycemic Load (GL)

A portion-adjusted measure of how a food will affect blood sugar: GL = (GI × carb grams per serving) / 100.

Glycemic Load improves on Glycemic Index by accounting for the actual carbohydrate content of a realistic serving. A carrot has a moderate GI (~47) but a tiny GL (~3) because a serving is so low in carbs. GL ≤10 is low, 11–19 moderate, ≥20 high. Use our glycemic load calculator to estimate meals.
