Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

A validated formula that estimates BMR from weight, height, age, and sex — the most accurate equation for the general population.

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in 1990, is the gold-standard BMR predictor for adults with normal body composition. For men: 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5; for women subtract 161 instead of adding 5. Accuracy is typically within ±10% for healthy adults. For very lean or muscular individuals, the Katch-McArdle equation is more accurate because it uses lean body mass directly.
