Nutritional Ketosis
A metabolic state in which the liver produces ketone bodies from fat as an alternative fuel to glucose.
Nutritional ketosis is defined by blood ketone (beta-hydroxybutyrate) levels of 0.5–3.0 mmol/L, achieved by restricting carbohydrate intake enough that liver glycogen depletes and the body shifts to fat oxidation and ketone production. Full keto-adaptation (where the brain and muscles efficiently use ketones) takes 2–4 weeks. Not to be confused with ketoacidosis, a pathological state in untreated type 1 diabetes.
